Dead Last: Economic autonomy eludes women

Mississippi consistently comes in on the bottom of economic indicators such as average per capita income. So it should come as no surprise that a recent report called “The Status of Women in Mississippi” concludes that Mississippi women rank 51st in the nation in economic autonomy.

Women in Mississippi are less likely to be employed, earn less when they are employed, are more likely to work in traditional, low-paying women`s jobs, and are less likely to own their own businesses than women elsewhere in the country. Out of the top 100 private companies in Mississippi, only five women are listed as top officers. And only…
