Companies which lay off employees this time of year are sometimes accused of lacking the holiday spirit, especially – since in most cases – it is profitable companies instead of ones with poor sales and profits that are cutting jobs.
MCI WorldCom, with headquarters in Clinton, recently announced the layoff of up to 2,300 employees nationwide. Only 35 of the company’s 1,100 employees in Mississippi are affected.
MCI WorldCom spokesman Jamie DePeau said while the holiday timing of the layoffs is unfortunate, there is never any good time to make this kind of announcement.
