A friend of mine told me that a business professor he had in college, infamous for his rambling, esoteric lectures, would from time to time offer up “a gem of wisdom.” The class knew to pay attention to these precious bits.
One gem has stuck with my friend through the years: There are worse things than a vacancy.
Thinking it over, I decided that he was right. Too many times, we rush to fill vacant staff positions just to fill them. A few weeks or months down the road, we realize that we`ve made a terrible mistake. And it`s a mistake that — in most cases — can`t be resolved easily.
