MBJ Editorial I

J.C. Burns appointment last week as director of the Mississippi Department of Economic and Community Development (MDECD) has been favorably received by many in the Mississippi business community. Gov. Ronnie Musgrove’s replacement for Jimmy Heidel takes the helm of one of the brightest stars in Mississippi government. DECD is one of the few departments in state government that Main Street business folks don’t mind.

Is there room for improvement at DECD? Certainly. But change for change’s sake — or payback politics — is ill advised.

It is our hope that J.C. Burns will recognize the talented staff and successful programs at the department and build on their achievements.

And we wish him the best.
