We often decry the lack of efficiency and effectiveness in state government. We wonder, “This is where our tax dollars are going?” But, at least one agency in Mississippi is doing a good job taking care of its customers who support it with taxes and fees — the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.
Hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation is big business in Mississippi. The state’s natural resources are one of the most important components of successful economic development. DWFP is charged with protecting these resources, managing them wisely and helping folks enjoy their time outdoors.
As we move through the summer, people start thinking about one of Mississippi’s biggest outdoor events: deer season. And it is an event with important economic contributions.
Every year, millions are spent on new trucks, guns and ATVs; leases and land; stands, slugs, shells and all manner of camouflage gear and garb. For many hunters, a successful season can mean just one deer. One good memory from camp. One special early morning or late afternoon in the woods. DWFP helps hunters bag that success.
No state agency is perfect or without critics, but for thousands of Mississippians and visitors, the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks is a good example of government working.
