Communities around the Magnolia State go to great lengths this time of year to encourage folks to do their holiday shopping locally.
For instance, on U.S. 49 at the outskirts of Jackson, the city of Clinton has a billboard reminding drivers that “Shopping Clinton Makes Cents.” And that sign is right, of course. It does pay to buy from hometown merchants.
Have you been wandering the mall since the day after Thanksgiving, muttering to yourself and wondering what to buy the boss, the spouse, the kids?
Here are a few more words of advice: When in doubt, buy Mississippi.
While the holidays are about much more than maxxxing out credit cards and consumers running amok, the economic impact is vitally important to the millions of Americans and thousands of Mississippians earning their livings in retail. Or, for that matter, manufacturing. And transport. And, yes, even marketing.
We tend to indict the shallow consumerism of December, but that gift buying and spending keeps folks working and a healthy economic cycle spinning.
And now back to buying Mississippi. The next few weeks offer us the perfect time to take a look at unique products and services from Mississippi companies.
It might be cheese straws from the Mississippi Gift Company. Hand-painted dishware or home accessories from Gail Pittman. Edam cheese from Mississippi State’s dairy science program. A high-tech kitchen appliance from Viking Range. Objets d’art from Shearwater Pottery. Your dream guitar from Peavey Electronics. Books from University Press of Mississippi or Quail Ridge Press. Pralines from the Indianola Pecan House.
Our downtowns abound with specialty shops brimming with perfect gifts. Mississippi artists and craftsmen are also worth consideration and support. So, happy holidays, happy shopping and buy Mississippi.
