Absentee ballots vary greatly

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — The Secretary of State’s Office has released the percentage of absentee ballots cast during the 2009 municipal primary elections. These numbers reflect only those entered by a city into the Statewide Management System or submitted to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Still, the numbers show significant variations from election to election.

“These results indicate a wide disparity in the use of absentee ballots in elections around the state,” said Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. “The cause of the disparity could be the result of a lack of voter information, lack of motivation of the voter by the candidates themselves or voter irregularities.

“Absentee balloting should be performed during a municipal election at the Municipal Clerk’s Office unless there is a specific exception.”

The percentage of absentee ballots ranged from 39.1 percent in the Macon to zero percent in Kosciusko, the Horn Lake Democratic primary and the Mantachie Republican primary. The average was for all primary elections statewide was 4.54 percent.
