Hosemann disappointed in voter turnout

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann is urging all Mississippians to head to the polls today after preliminary numbers show voter turnout during the recent municipal primary elections was low.

“I am very disappointed in the low number of Mississippians who cast their ballot in the municipal primary,” said Hosemann. He said preliminary numbers “show less than one in four eligible voters actually cast their ballot in the municipal primary. We hope to see a considerable amount more in the municipal general.”

Thirty-five municipalities entered their May 4 municipal primary results in the Statewide Elections Management System and with the Secretary of State’s Office. Of the 415,241 registered voters in those elections, 98,664, or 23.76 percent, cast a ballot. The percentages ranged from 0.83 percent in the Horn Lake Democratic primary to 82.62 percent in the Crenshaw Democratic primary.

In a separate item, the Secretary of State’s Office said it would be observing the municipal general elections in Arcola, Bay St. Louis, Booneville, Brookhaven, Clarksdale, Como, Fayette, Greenwood, Meridian, Metcalf, Ocean Springs, Pace, Shannon, Verona, Vicksburg and Wiggins.
