RIDGELAND — Marathon Makeover and Make-A-Wish Foundation of Mississippi are teaming up to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses at this year’s Renaissance at Colony Park Half Marathon and GI Associates 5K Run scheduled for June 13. Marathon Makeover participants have been raising money for wish granting since April of this year. Approximately 1,200 participants from 12 states are expected to participate in this year’s event.
In order to assist the Mississippi Chapter of Make-A-Wish Foundation reach all of the children on their waiting list this year, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America has offered a challenge grant via its Wish Fulfillment Fund. Every dollar raised from new sources from now until July 1 will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000.
Marathon Makeover, in its sixth year of existence, is a 40-week wellness program designed to promote healthy living through hands-on training, positive motivation and a friendly group experience for regular people.
Event coordinators are asking the community to come out and show their support by participating in “Cheering for Charities” along the marathon route. Neighborhood organizations, churches, schools, businesses and individuals will be positioned along the route that will begin and end at the Renaissance at Colony Park. Groups will be judged on creativity, enthusiasm and size. The winner will receive $1,000 and the runner-up will get $500 to go towards their selected charity. Participants must register. Registration closes June 10. To learn more about this event, visit www.runrenaissance.com, or www.marathonmakeover.com.
This race is open to the public. Registration closes on June 8 or at 1,200 registrants. As of June 4, there are only 100 openings left. The race will begin at 6 a.m., the GI Associates 5K run will start at 6:15 a.m. and the Kids Fun Run will start at 8:30 a.m.
All registrants of the Renaissance at Colony Park Half Marathon and GI Associates 5K will be entered to win a new Honda Fit from Patty Peck Honda of Ridgeland. This car will be given away Oct. 17, 2009, at the culmination of the Marathon Makeover 40-week Wellness Program after the finish of the Marathon Makeover Marathon and Half Marathon.
