School board sells 16th Section land

MENDENHALL — Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, along with the Simpson County School Board, recently participated in a sale of 16th Section land to Earth Station Communications at the Simpson School District Offices in Mendenhall.

“We are pleased to work with the Simpson County School Board on this unusual use of 16th Section Land,” Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. “The school district is getting an overwhelming return for this sale, and in these economic times, we need to make every effort to get the most money back into the hands of our schoolchildren.”

The school district will sell 99.6 acres of 16th Section land in return for 373 acres of land that will be designated as 16th Section and that holds roughly $200,000 worth of timber, as well as a one-time $2-million payment.

Earth Station Communications, LLC, plans to use the purchased land to build a salt dome, and the Simpson County School Board retained the mineral interests.
