New fishing records confirmed

MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST — The Commission on Marine Resources recently certified seven new Mississippi saltwater sportfishing records. Two conventional tackle records and five fly-fishing records were approved.

New records on conventional tackle are:

• Donald Armes Jr. of Pass Christian — broke the state record for Atlantic sharpnose shark July 21 with a weight of 10 pounds, 4.16 ounces. He broke the previous record of 6 pounds, 4 ounces, which he set in June 2009.

• Nickolas Vaughn of D’Iberville — broke the state record for finetooth shark July 19 with a weight of 22 pounds, 9.66 ounces, surpassing the previous record of 21 pounds, 11.84 ounces set earlier that month.

The new fly-fishing records are:

• Dwayne Armes of Pass Christian —set a new record for remora with a weight of 2 pounds, 13.76 ounces.

• Armes broke the record for king mackerel with a weight of 13 pounds, 11.30 ounces, surpassing the previous record of 5 pounds, 3.2 ounces set in 2002.

• Armes also broke the record for Atlantic sharpnose shark with a weight of 10 pounds, 6.24 ounces, surpassing the previous record of 9 pounds, 4.48 ounces, which he set in June 2009.

Rick Lauman of Ocean Springs — broke the state record for tripletail July 15 with a weight of 14 pounds, 12 ounces, surpassing the previous record of 10 pounds, 1.6 ounces, set in 2003.

Doug Borries of Ocean Springs — broke the state record blacktip shark July 16 with a weight of 55 pounds, 0.32 ounces, surpassing the previous record of 34 pounds, 10.9 ounces.
