Alcorn reports successful Field Day
LORMAN — More than 300 people came to Alcorn State University to participate in its annual Agriculture Research and Extension Field Day Aug. 27. Limited-resource farmers from all over the state, agriculture workers, students, alumni, USDA officials, teachers of agriculture and locals interested in learning more about agriculture gathered at the Extension Research Complex for a free of charge educational experience.
“The purpose of this event organized by Alcorn’s research and extension programs is to educate limited-resource farmers and the public on the benefits of the agricultural technologies, and to provide answers to the problems facing them as crop growers and consumers,” said Dr. Patrick Igbokwe, interim director–Experiment Station.
This year’s theme was “Sustainable agriculture: building stronger local communities.” The participants learned more about fruit and vegetable production and processing, livestock management and technology, water quality and conservation, biotechnology for food quality and productivity, marketing and business management and accessing financial resources. The information was shared through demonstrations, filed plot tours, exhibits and lectures by research scientists, extension agents and educators, USDA representatives and guest speakers.
