Bankruptcy judge to decide tax dispute
BATESVILLE – A federal bankruptcy judge will decide whether the city of Batesville and Panola County can collect property taxes from the bankrupt Tri-Lakes Medical Center.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge David W. Houston III wrapped up a hearing this past week. Houston told attorneys for both sides that he will rule in the case in about a month.
The city and county want $1.9 million they say is due in property taxes from the hospital.
UPS Capital and Stillwater National Bank, the bankrupt facility’s major creditors, have objected to paying the taxes, citing an exemption in state law for nonprofit hospitals.
Tri-Lakes has continued to operate during the bankruptcy proceedings.
