Environmental group: Utility projects ‘wasteful’

BILOXI — An environmental group has notified the state of its intention to file a federal lawsuit to block regional water and sewer projects along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The Gulf Restoration Network claimed at a news conference Tuesday in Biloxi that the Mississippi Development Authority, HUD and several utility authorities have violated federal law in the planning of nine different water and sewer projects in South Mississippi.
The environmental group says private developers are the ones who stand to benefit most from nine water and sewer projects in rural areas of Harrison, Stone and Jackson counties.
MDA spokesman Lee Youngblood says the projects are a critical part of the post-Hurricane Katrina infrastructure recovery.
