U.S. 98 to see improvements

LAMAR COUNTY — The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will soon begin a comprehensive project involving six miles of U.S. 98 West in Lamar County.

The $ 7.5-million project, which was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders, of Laurel, involves work to resurface all lanes and pave the shoulders of the roadway starting at Weathersby Road and continuing west to Highway 589.

In addition, work on the project will include: extending the six lanes of roadway to Old Highway 11 (King Road); widening the entrances to Old Highway 11 (King Road) and replacing the traffic signal; extending turn lanes in both directions at Old Highway 11 and King Road; widening Gravel Pit Road to three lanes for a fourth of a mile from U.S.98; upgrading the intersection at Hegwood Drive and U.S. 98 and replacing the traffic signal; and, widening Highway 589 and adding islands at the entrance to U.S. 98.

Work on the project will be limited during peak travel times, and crews will be conducting some of the work at night. The project is scheduled for completion fall of 2010.
