JACKSON — Southern District Public Service Commissioner Leonard Betz is warning Mississippians of fraudulent e-mails that tell consumers to register their cell phone numbers or risk being contacted by telemarketers.

“This scam is not new; however, consumers are still receiving e-mail messages asking them to call a number to register their cell phone by a certain date. I have received the e-mail myself, along with a number of calls from very concerned consumers,” Bentz said.

There is no deadline to register, and the lists do not expire, Bentz added.
