WCU-COM flooded with applications
HATTIESBURG — In the last five weeks, more than 400 students have applied to the new William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCU-COM), which will begin classes in the fall of 2010.
Construction continues on the new COM buildings on the Hattiesburg campus. Carey’s College of Osteopathic Medicine is the 26th in the nation.
“It is exciting watching the buildings go up,” said Dr. Michael Murphy, founding dean of the WCU-COM. “We received provisional accreditation on Sept. 14. The COM buildings are progressing rapidly and on schedule.”
One hundred students will be chosen from the total number of applicants to begin classes in the fall of 2010. All students apply through the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS. The student’s initial application is referred to as a primary. Students wishing to apply to WCU-COM must pay a fee and specify WCU-COM. When the primary application is complete, usually between six to eight weeks, it is then downloaded to the WCU-COM and a secondary application is emailed to the student. Once the secondary application is complete, the file is reviewed and letters to the most qualified students are sent out inviting them to interview. Interviews will begin in December and continue until the inaugural class of 100 is filled.
