JACKSON — The Mississippi Business Journal has unveiled a brand new addition to its recently renovated website.
Visitors can now click on the “Lists” tab on the MBJ homepage (www.msbusiness.com/lists) for instant online access to MBJ’s digital warehouse of business listings — everything from advertising agencies to website design firms.
“MBJ has always run lists in our newspaper. Nearly all of our issues each week will have one or two lists featured towards the back of the paper,” said MBJ staff researcher Stephen McDill. “Now that we have added electronic or digital versions of these lists to our website, our readers can go ahead and look at more than 60-plus lists that will be running next year.”
Data that is featured on the lists goes way beyond just contact information. The banks list, for example, which will be featured in the paper in January, is ranked by total assets while the law firms list is ranked by number of attorneys and also includes number of partners, specialties and much more.
Long gone are the days when the MBJ used fax machines and a phone book to develop lists. With a full-time, in-house staff researcher and software and tech-support from DataJoe, LLC, a Colorado-based research development company, MBJ is locked and loaded for a busy 2010.
“We are adding new companies each week to our lists,” said MBJ editor Ross Reily. “We try to be as inclusive as possible, surveying everyone from Tutwiler to Tylertown. Now that our lists are being made available on our website, everyone can see the finished product.”
There are two versions of list products available for sale on the List page. After checking out an HTML preview of the product, customers have the option to purchase an Excel or PDF version of the list. Excel lists are currently priced at $10 while PDF versions are $8.
“Once a customer clicks on the list they want, they will see the two options available and can add the list to their shopping cart just like Amazon.com or any standard e-commerce purchase,” said McDill. “They can then checkout using DataJoe’s secure servers. All they have to do is follow the prompts and fill out the contact and billing information forms. Once lists are purchased the files are made available for download and a confirmation e-mail is sent to the customer.”
All orders will appear on credit card statements as a purchase from DataJoe, LLC.
The new List page is also being promoted in a special holiday offer courtesy of the MBJ circulation department. For only $79, new subscribers to the MBJ can get unlimited web access, 52 weekly newspaper issues and the annual hard copy edition of the 2010 Book of Lists, MBJ’s annual collection of lists (a $250 value). This year an electronic Book of Lists (called e-BOL) is being offered on the new List page at a 30 percent discount from the original retail value. Customers can subscribe online, via e-mail or telephone. Once they subscribe to the MBJ, a discount code will be e-mailed to them that they can use to make the purchase. The special offer extends until March 31.
“E-commerce is nothing new to the online community so we are really glad to be on board now ourselves,” said McDill. “This is a huge step for us as a company and there has already been a lot of positive buzz about this endeavor from the business community. With the current economy, it’s always helpful to find new revenue streams. Hopefully, customers will take a look for themselves and then start spreading the word. We want to start selling lists like hot cakes.”
