Top 40 Under 40 still much-coveted

Luncheon will offer a video presentation of each winner, touching on a few of each recipient’s achievements

Of the three awards programs offered during the Mississippi Business & Technology EXPO, Top 40 Under 40 is by far the oldest. But, it remains one of the most coveted awards, and a large, enthusiastic crowd is expected at the Top 40 Under 40 Luncheon, which will be held Jan. 13 at noon at the Mississippi Trade Mart.

One reason for the awards’ continued popularity is the criteria, which is steep. Recipients must be under the age of 40, have a proven professional track record and be a pillar of their community.

Every year, the Top 40 Under 40 Luncheon plays to a packed house. Organizers are planning for the same this year at EXPO.

“Each year I scan the room and am amazed,” said Ashley Varnes, account executive with the Mississippi Business Journal. “It is not just the size of the crowd, but the quality of those attending. Not only are the awardees a stellar group, the guest list reads like a who’s who of Mississippi business. It is exciting to see all of these young leaders and to listen to their achievements. If you like success stories, the Top 40 Under 40 Luncheon is the place to be.”

Ross Reily, MBJ editor, said, “There are lots of people who are good at their jobs, but it is the ones who are able to juggle their jobs, their family and their civic responsibilities who become the true leaders of Mississippi.”

This year’s Top 40 Under 40 Luncheon sponsors — BancorpSouth and Cellular South, both repeat sponsors — agree.

“We are encouraged and excited to be involved in this program again,” said Dave Miller, public relations manager at Cellular South. Miller added that the sponsorship is a great fit for his company, which looks to create a culture of professional development and community involvement among its staff – creating leaders of the company and the communities the wireless telecom serves.

BancorpSouth chairman and chief executive officer Aubrey Patterson said, “BancorpSouth is proud to again be a sponsor of the Mississippi Business Journal’s Top 40 Under 40 awards program. This is a showcase for the state’s young professionals, and highlights the depth of the business and professional talent for our state.”

The Top 40 Under 40 Luncheon will offer a video presentation of each winner, touching on a few of each recipient’s achievements. (The MBJ will subsequently produce a special publication profiling all of this year’s winners.) In addition, award recipients and guests will enjoy food from Mangia Bene Inc. of Jackson as well as an address from featured speaker Joel Bomgar, founder of Bomgar Corporation.
