Barksdale offers to pay for principals

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — Four Mississippi school districts have accepted an offer from the Barksdale Reading Institute to search the nation for “top-notch” elementary school principals and pay their salaries.

Claiborne Barksdale is director of the institute that was created with a $100-million donation by former Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale in 2000. He says hiring principals is the organization’s latest initiative.

School officials say the program is beneficial because it saves a district salary expenses.

Principals will be hired for Quitman County Elementary School, Crenshaw Elementary in the North Panola School District and William Sullivan Elementary in the Holmes County School District. The search is ongoing for a principal for Hazlehurst Elementary.

  1. This is such a wonderful offering…I wish a bit more emphasis was on the Delta. We really need this type of initiative for most of the public schools, throughout the region. Though I have no children, in the system or otherwise, I thank you!
