Board eyeing troubled school district

JACKSON — The state Board of Education meets Thursday to decide whether to ask the governor for a state of emergency so it can take over the Okolona School District.

The district has two schools with 657 students.

Officials say the problems in Okolona include everything from buildings to classroom instruction, federal programs and special education.

Department of Education officials say that by June, the district may be in the red by about $38,700.

The Clarion-Ledger reports that Okolona also is one of eight school districts labeled as failing, which means students’ standardized test scores are low and there has not been a significant enough number of students improving on the tests each year.
