Mitchell tapped as D.A.

Gov. Haley Barbour announced the appointment of Brenda F. Mitchell as district attorney in the 11th Circuit Court District, which includes Bolivar, Coahoma, Quitman, and Tunica counties. Mitchell, who currently serves as interim district attorney, will begin her new duties immediately.

Mitchell has served as interim district attorney since Laurence Y. Mellen resigned the position Dec. 31, 2009; a special election will be held on Nov. 2 to fill the remainder of the term, which ends January 2012.

Mitchell has served as assistant district attorney since 1995. Previously, she was a staff attorney for North Mississippi Rural Legal Services in Cleveland and Clarksdale. Mitchell also was a legal consultant for the Center for Constitutional Rights in Greenville.

She is a member of the Mississippi Bar Association and the Mississippi Prosecutors Association.

Mitchell studied criminal justice at Mississippi Delta Community College and earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration from the University of Mississippi. She received her law degree from Mississippi College School of Law.
