Schloegel: Won’t seek reelection

GULFPORT — Gulfport Mayor George Schloegel tells The Sun Herald that he will be a one-term mayor, and if city salary cuts are needed, they will start with the mayor and city council.

Schloegel earns over $92,000 as mayor of the state’s second largest city, and council members earn just over $23,000 for their part-time positions. The salaries were increased by the previous city council.

Instead of cutting salaries, Schloegel said this week the city hopes to save money in other ways.

The administration and council are working to eliminate a $4.5 million deficit, already trimmed by half at the beginning of the budget year in October. The city also faces $188 million in debt, $60 million of which is for water and sewer projects.
