Senate restores $79M in cuts to budget

JACKSON — The Mississippi Senate has agreed to a House plan to restore $79 million in state budget cuts.

The bill passed 26-22 Feb. 17 with little debate. It is being sent to Republican Gov. Haley Barbour, who has pledged to veto it.

There are not enough Senate votes for a two-thirds majority to override a veto.

Barbour disagrees with the way the $79 million would be distributed. Most of the money would go to elementary and secondary education. Barbour says community colleges and other programs would not receive enough.

State revenues are lagging, and Barbour has cut $458.5 million from what started as a nearly $6 billion budget.

The state fiscal year ends June 30.
