Three candidates for the position of vice president for research at the University of Southern Mississippi will visit the Hattiesburg and Gulf Coast campuses in the next few weeks for interviews and meetings with university constituents. Selected by a university search committee, the candidates include: Dr. A. Gordon Emslie, associate vice president for research and dean of the graduate college at Oklahoma State University; Dr. Timothy Phillips, a senior faculty fellow in the Texas A University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences; and, Dr. Denis Wiesenburg, dean of the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.
The university is seeking a replacement for Dr. Cecil Burge, who announced his retirement last fall and has served the university in a variety of capacities during a career spanning 40 years. During the last five-plus years as vice president for research, he helped the university secure record amounts of external funding, including a high of $102 million in 2006.
