USM to build new Coast facility

LONG BEACH — Construction of a new building on the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus is a sign of its recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

The $7.6-million Science Building will feature 33,580 square feet of biology and chemistry laboratories, a marine science laboratory, faculty offices, research space and classrooms. Construction for the facility is scheduled to begin in fall 2010 and is expected to be ready for occupancy by spring 2012.

“We are grateful to the Mississippi Legislature for this funding,” said Dr. Pat Joachim, associate provost for Southern Miss Gulf Coast. “This new facility will provide much-needed space for our growing student population.”

Currently in the planning phase with Allred Architectural Group, the building will be constructed on the northwest corner of campus, which is located outside of the FEMA flood zone. Funded through Senate bills in 2003 and 2004, the Science Building will match the architectural style of the campus’ Advanced Education Center and library.
