Corps looking to widen bayou
JACKSON COUNTY — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has launched an environmental study of widening Bayou Casotte in Jackson County.
John Crane, project manager with the corps, said Feb. 25 that work on the environmental impact statement could take from 18 to 36 months.
The Mississippi Press reports the study will examine widening the channel by 50 to 150 feet. The current channel is 350 feet wide.
Crane says the project would run from Horn Island through the Mississippi Sound to the mouth of Bayou Casotte.
The study is expected to cost $4 million and is being funded through the Jackson County Port Authority.
Officials say a wider channel would offer safer navigation to the 400 ships that use the Bayou Casotte channel annually.
