Voter ID to be on General Election ballot

JACKSON — Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann announced the Voter Identification Initiative has the sufficient number of signatures required to be placed on the 2011 General Election ballot.

“After a thorough review and count of the signature certifications sent to us by the petitioners of the Voter Identification initiative,” said Hosemann, “we are pleased to say the voters of the State of Mississippi will be able to cast their ballot for or against a voter identification requirement in this state.”

“It is my opinion a fair vote on this issue is long overdue, and I am pleased with the outcome of this long and arduous process.”

Petitioners are required to gather a minimum of 89,285 certified signatures, with at least 17,857 certified signatures from each of the five congressional districts as they existed in the year 2000.

The official count of signature certifications by the state were: Congressional District 1, 23,527; Congressional District 2, 27,081; Congressional District 3, 26,582; Congressional District 4, 25,733; and, Congressional District 5, 28,755. The total was 131,678.
