City decides against gag order

WAVELAND — Waveland officials have rescinded an employee policy limiting who could make statements to the media.

The board of aldermen adopted the so-called gag order April 6.

Mayor Tommy Longo said it was more of a “housekeeping” issue than a controversial one.

Employees were told not to talk to the media without approval from the mayor or city attorney.

Longo says the idea was to get the proper person in front of the camera or speaking to the newspaper. He says he thinks most people understood that.

He says he’s sent a memo to all city departments explaining that although the board has rescinded the addendum to the handbook, employees should still respect the chain of command.
