MDEQ introduces new enHance class

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has 11 new members in its enHance program, a voluntary stewardship program begun in 2009 that recognizes committed environmental leaders who accomplish goals beyond their legal requirements.

enHance is open to facilities, cities, counties and other entities who are interested in the program, and applicants can choose from three tiers — Associate, Steward, or Leader.

Trudy Fisher, MDEQ executive director, said, “In these economic times, the companies that can adapt, save energy, save costs, save materials and are more environmentally aware are the ones that are more competitive and better prepared to face challenges.”

enHance’s 2010 class includes:

• Leader — Caterpillar High Performance Extrusions (Oxford), Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) (Gulfport) and Southern Natural Gas – Pickens Station (Pickens)

• Steward — Columbus Brick (Columbus), Leaf River Cellulose, LLC (New Augusta)

Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (Gulfport), Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems (Ocean Springs) and Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (Pascagoula)

• Associate — GDF Suez Choctaw Gas Generation (Ackerman), GDF Suez Red Hills Power Plant (Ackerman) and Gulf States Manufacturers – a Nucor Company (Starkville)
