Sawmill to close, then reopen

ACKERMAN — Packaging Corporation of America will close its Choctaw County Sawmill this year, but it won’t lie dormant for long.

The company mentioned the closing during its first quarter earnings conference call.

Alan Bates, director of the Choctaw County Mississippi Economic Development Foundation, says officials confirmed they were closing the Ackerman plant. However, it is being purchased by another company and should reopen immediately.

The plant employs about 70 people. Operations include debarking, sawing, kiln drying and log spraying.

According to company figures, the sawmill sold 51 million board feet of lumber used in the building products and furniture industries in 2008. The figures for 2009 were not available.

Officials from Packaging Corporation of America could not be reached for comment.
