Shipyard going to five-day workweek

PASCAGOULA — Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding will return to a five-day workweek at its shipyards in Mississippi and Louisiana May 31.

Northrop Grumman vice president Irwin F. Edenzon announced the change yesterday in a news release.

The company had worked the four-day, 10-hour-a-day workweek since late 2004.

Edenzon says future details, such as shift times, would be communicated in the weeks ahead.

Northrop Grumman has about 12,000 workers at the Ingalls yard in Pascagoula and about 17,000 overall in its operations, including Gulfport and Louisiana yards in Avondale and Tallulah.

Workers are currently under a labor contract that ends March 2012.
