Blessing of Fleet returns after long hiatus

PASCAGOULA — The Blessing of the Fleet is being revived in Pascagoula after 15 years.

With oil spewing in the Gulf and hurricane season set to start June 1, those who love the water and make their livings from it will bring their boats to the Pascagoula River on Saturday.

The events will include a parade and a blessing from Our Lady of Victories Pastor Anthony Arguelles.

William Odom, chairman of the organizing committee, tells the Mississippi Press that the original blessing was for working fishermen to enjoy a “safe and prosperous year,” and was eventually extended to recreational boaters as well.
