Air ambulance service wins partial victory

PURVIS — A Lamar County jury has awarded $61,833 to Southeast Mississippi Air Ambulance District, half of what the company sought from the county.

SMAAD had sued Lamar County after it paid a portion of its annual membership subsidy after the county left SEMAAD in February 2009.

Joe Bounds, president of the board of supervisors, says any decision to appeal the verdict would have to be made by the five-member board but he didn’t think such a move was likely.

Lamar County had belonged to SEMAAD since 1971.

SEMAAD contended it was owed $217,287 by the county.

The county paid SEMAAD $88,333, arguing that it owed for only the first five months of the fiscal year, from October through February.
