Barbour names Waldrup to replace Powell as DA

JACKSON — Gov. Haley Barbour has appointed Steven Waldrup as district attorney for the 21st Circuit Court District effective July 1. Waldrup will replace James Powell, who will retire at the end of June.

Waldrup will serve in the post until a special election is held and a winner is sworn in. The 21st Circuit Court District includes Holmes, Humphreys and Yazoo counties. A special election will be held Nov. 2 to elect a district attorney to serve the remaining portion of the term. Barbour said he would issue a Writ of Election in July in accordance with Section 23-15-843 of the Mississippi Code.

Waldrup has served as assistant district attorney for the 21st Circuit Court District since 1999. He previously was judge pro tem for the City of Madison and had a law practice in Jackson. He also worked as an attorney at Abraham and Associates in Greenwood.

Waldrup graduated from the University of Mississippi with his bachelor’s degree and a law degree.
