Cochran: More cooperation needed for flood maps

WASHINGTON — Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) is stressing the need for federal agencies to be more cooperative in dealing with Mississippi communities affected by an ongoing process to update flood maps. Mississippi’s senior senator also welcomed a decision to try to establish arbitration panels to resolve disputes.

Cochran was among the lawmakers who met with officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Army Corps of Engineers May 27 to discuss concerns raised by communities about problems with the federal government’s approach to developing the updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs). Updated FIRMs will determine which residents would be required to purchase FEMA-administered flood insurance.

“I hope FEMA and the Army Corps understand that we expect improved interaction with local communities. The concerns we have in Mississippi about the flood map process are legitimate and need to be addressed as such,” Cochran said. “I am glad this meeting took place and I trust that we will make progress as a result,”
