Georgia-Pacific buys Alabama mills

MONROEVILLE, Ala. — Georgia-Pacific says it has reached an agreement to acquire Alabama River and Alabama Pine pulp mills for an undisclosed amount of cash from current owner Parsons & Whittemore.

Georgia-Pacific announced the deal Wednesday. It says the deal includes a biodiesel plant, chip mills and a wood yard.

George Landegger, chairman and CEO of the current ownership, says all 600 employees will keep their jobs.

Landegger says Georgia-Pacific approached his privately held firm about the acquisition because it wants to increase its production of fluff pulp, an absorbent filler.

Georgia-Pacific operates fluff pulp mills at New Augusta and in Brunswick, Ga.
