Man sentenced for Katrina-related fraud

CARRIERE — A 55-year-old Carriere man has been sentenced in federal court after pleading guilty to one count of making false statements to a federal agency.

Wayne L. Manning was sentenced to five years probation for a fraudulent application he made to the Louisiana Road Home Program after Hurricane Katrina. Manning also was ordered to pay $65,000 in restitution — $5,000 immediately and $500 per month until the entire amount is paid.

Manning received the Road Home grant for damages to commercial property he owned in New Orleans. He claimed he was a resident of the property at the time of the storm, but actually lived in Carriere.
