Boat fire injures Gulf oil fighters

GULF OF MEXICO — Authorities say 130 people were evacuated from a vessel that housed oil spill response workers when an electrical outlet caught fire Tuesday, but there were only “very minor” injuries.

Scott Epperson, a spokesman for the Gulf oil spill’s unified command, said the injuries included a man who bumped his elbow while using a fire extinguisher and another who complained of having a dry mouth and was concerned he may have inhaled chemicals.

Plaquemines Parish spokesman Kurt Fromherz Epperson said the vessel was in Baptiste Collette Bayou near Venice.

Epperson described the vessel as a flotel, which is lingo for a floating hotel. Such vessels are being used to keep workers close to impacted areas.
