Chevron gives $1.25M to nonprofit organizations

PASCAGOULA — Chevron Products Company announced “Energy for Learning” donations totaling $1.25 million to be distributed between two non-profit organizations active in Mississippi: EXCEL BY 5, an early childhood community certification program; and, the National Audubon Society in its efforts to develop the Pascagoula River Audubon Center.

“Today, Chevron is continuing the journey in its support of education-based initiatives,” said Chevron Pascagoula Refinery general manager Tom Kovar.

To celebrate Chevron’s contributions and also commemorate the company’s education and childcare-related partnerships after Hurricane Katrina, Chevron sponsored an “Energy for Learning” luncheon hosted by Kovar and Save the Children senior vice president Mark Shriver.

After Chevron restored 40 childcare centers in Jackson County following Katrina, Save the Children and Mississippi State University, in partnership with Help and Hope Foundation, used what has become known as the “Chevron Model” to restore an additional 37 centers along the Gulf Coast. Because of Chevron’s efforts, six months after the storm more than 2,800 children had returned to quality childcare centers on the Gulf Coast.

In June 2006, Chevron continued its commitment to recovery by donating $4 million in “Energy for Learning” grants to South Mississippi school districts affected by the storm. Through “Energy for Learning,” Chevron also contributed $2 million to Save the Children for the construction of two state-of-the-art childcare centers in Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis-Waveland. In addition to Chevron funds, the Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Fund awarded Save the Children $1.8 million to further assist with construction of these facilities.

The latest contributions represent a five-year commitment of $150,000 annually and $100,000 annually to EXCEL BY 5 and Audubon, respectively.
