Jimmy Hopkins, associate superintendent of the Hattiesburg Public School District, has been named interim superintendent.
Hopkins took over July 1, replacing superintendent Annie Wimbish, who retired June 30.
A search to find a permanent replacement for Wimbish is underway. The board hopes to name a new superintendent by Sept. 1, and have that person in place by Jan. 1.
Hopkins has been with the district for more than 25 years. He started out as principal of curriculum and instruction at Hattiesburg High School in 1984. He was named assistant superintendent for personnel and general administration in 1986. He stayed in that post for 13 years before being named associate superintendent.
