Northrop Grumman delivers destroyer to Navy
PASCAGOULA — Northrop Grumman has completed the sale and delivery of the guided missile destroyer Gravely to the Navy.
The Gravely is the 27th Aegis guided missile destroyer built for the Navy.
The destroyer is 510 feet long and weighs 9,500 tons and has four gas-turbine propulsion plants that can power the ship to speeds above 30 knots.
The Gravely will be commissioned Nov. 20 in Wilmington, N.C.
It is named for the late Vice Adm. Samuel L. Gravely Jr. Born in Richmond, Va., Gravely attended Virginia Union University and enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1942. In 1944, he was commissioned as an officer. His 38-year career saw many milestones, including becoming the first black commander of a warship.
