Attorney pleads guilty to bank fraud

GREENVILLE — Booneville attorney Thomas D. Keenum Sr. has pleaded guilty to bank fraud charges in U.S. District Court in Greenville.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports Keenum entered the plea yesterday to one count.

Court records show Keenum faces up to 30 years in prison, no more than $1 million in fines and possible restitution.

Prosecutors say Keenum had local attorneys file title opinions that Keenum owed no money on 10.5 acres in Alcorn County. Prosecutors say Keenum used the fraudulent opinions to get new bank loans totaling more than $376,000 as he sought to get himself out of financial difficulties from 2005 until 2007.

The government says he borrowed from two banks in Mississippi and one in Alabama.

No sentencing date has been set.
