Community college's fall enrollment soars

RAYMOND — Hinds Community College’s enrollment across its six Mississippi campuses is up an average of 25 percent.

Vicksburg campus dean Hilton Dyar attributes the increase to a slumping economy and the availability of financial aid. The Vicksburg Post reports that classes began Monday at the campuses. School officials say registration continues through Friday and so far it has 14,133 full-time equivalent students on its campuses.

Dyar says more than 80 percent of the students enrolled at the Vicksburg campus are on federal financial aid or an academic or athletic scholarship.

This year, the number of students enrolled in work force development, a program that offers classes to enhance a technical skill, increased by 126 percent — 2,210 students, up from 978 last year.
