Federal judge rules in favor of medical center

NATCHEZ — A federal judge has declined to dismiss the Natchez Regional Medical Center’s lawsuit against its former management company.

Quorum Health Resources and two former hospital employees had sought dismissal of eight of the nine allegations NRMC raised in its Dec. 2009 lawsuit.

U.S. District Judge David Bramlette ruled against dismissing the lawsuit last week.

Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum had managed NRMC for 16 years, from 1992 until the hospital board voted to end the contract in February 2008, alleging it had been misled about NRMC’s financial situation.

NRMC filed the lawsuit after a lengthy attempt to sell the county-owned hospital.

The lawsuit seeks $46 million in compensatory damages and an unspecified amount of punitive damages.
