Internet phone users to pay more for calls

HINDS COUNTY — Hinds County residents who make calls through their Internet service may see an increase soon in their bill.

The Hinds County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 yesterday to impose a $1 monthly fee on Internet-based phone service. The money will fund emergency services, such as dispatching, call towers and technology.

The Clarion-Ledger reports board president Robert Graham proposed levying the fee.

Graham said officials don’t know how much the fee could generate.

Supervisor George Smith, who supported the fee, said the county could use the money.
