Schools to get $47M in stimulus funding

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan says Mississippi will receive $47 million to help improve the state’s most low-performing schools.

The money is part of the $3.5 billion that will be made available to state’s this spring from the 2009 budget and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Duncan says in a news release that something needs to be done when a school continues to perform in the bottom five percent of the state, isn’t showing signs of growth or has graduation rates below 60 percent.

Districts will compete for the funding.
