HATTIESBURG — A Greene County supervisor is on trial in federal court in Hattiesburg for a Hurricane Katrina fraud case.
The Hattiesburg American reports that Earnest Holder was indicted in October on charges of bribery, perjury, tax fraud and conspiracy connected with the hiring of contractors for debris removal after Hurricane Katrina.
Prosecutors say Holder conspired with a former supervisor to receive illegal kickbacks from Mid-South Pipe Co., which was hired for the debris cleanup.
His attorney Scott Schwartz says Holder is simply accused of committing a crime.
The proceedings began Tuesday before Judge Keith Starrett. Prosecutors have said, if convicted, Holder faces up 26 years in prison and $1.2 million in fines.
