Eleven Coast road projects still waiting

MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST — The Mississippi Department of Transportation says workers have completed six of the 17 big projects slated for this year along the Gulf Coast.

Kelly Castleberry, MDOT’s district engineer for the southern half of the state, tells The Sun Herald that nine of the 11 remaining projects are under construction.

The 17 projects cost more than $135 million.

Castleberry says work will also be completed within a couple of months on $11.5 million in Hurricane Katrina repairs and rebuilding of city streets overseen and paid for by MDOT.

Katrina road work has surpassed $1 billion, including more than $600 million just to replace the bridges over St. Louis Bay and Biloxi Bay.
