Blues Trail marker to honor singer Otis Clay

JACKSON — A Mississippi Blues Trail marker is going up in Waxhaw in honor of native son, soul and gospel singer Otis Clay.

The ceremony will be held Friday, and Clay will give a performance after the dedication. Clay and his band will travel from Chicago for the event in a park just east of Highway 1, six miles north of Rosedale.

Gov. Haley Barbour says in a news release that Clay is deserving of the marker and is a talented artist.

Clay began his musical journey at the age of four at the Tree of Life Missionary Baptist Church, where he sang with a family gospel group.

Clay started recording soul music in the 1960s and has maintained a career singing both sacred and secular music.
